Default Poll: when did your clutch go?

Was talking with someone at work who has a theory about clutches.

They reckon that on older cars, brake fluid got changed, but clutch fluid never did, so it absorbed water and then the slave went in cold weather when the water froze.

Now our cars have sealed cylinders, but I've heard tell the seal on the top of the master can break up, and therefore allow moisture into the fluid.

There've been loads of posts over the last few weeks, and I'm beginning to wonder if there's a pattern.

So: what part of the year did your clutch break?

Mine is on the way out at the moment. It has been playing up for the last two weeks.
My mate ( mechanic Ex Rover Garage) is going to bleed the clutch next week. The pedal feels like there is air in the system.
If it turns out to be the Slave he will replace all of the clutch while the Gearbox is out.

mine went in the frist mouth of getting the car, (feb 2006) replace by the garage as it was only the slave if I would like the clutch it self replace it would be £100.
as car had only done 19,000 miles and clutch was ok. so I paid it.
did they put a new one in I will never know.

When I bought mine it had a new clutch not that many miles previously - one of the reasons I decided on it.

What would be useful is a poll of mileage covered by a clutch

Hi

Brought my 75 in 2005 (1 year old) from a local Electrical company with 4.8k on the clock. It had a new clutch after 3.8k and that cost them £550. It has now done 29k and still ok.

Mine went at 40K in central London, cost £980 inluding tow. Clutch went straight to floor. I told garage I wanted new slave, master cylinder, thrust bearing, clutch plate etc.. Clutch is smoother now but the incident has made me a little less confident of the clutch system and maybe think of an automatic if I ever change it for another 75?ZT especially for large town/city use.
