I just read that as well.......RIP to the pilot and thankfully nobody else was involved.

may be the same reason he crashed, possibly unconscious?? pure speculation of course.. AFAIK the ejection system is purely mechanical to avoid misfiring in systems failure situations..

He did eject but the outcome is never guaranteed. Apparently crashed after an AAR problem, wonder if there was a collision? It was one of 6 F18's that were returning to the US, the other 5 together with the tanker and support plane aborted the flight and diverted to Lossie. Very sad and deeply so for his family.

I heard the rumour from a usually reliable source that it clipped the tanker.
There seems to be very few details confirmed publicly about what happened.

Hmmm, interesting. I read that ISIL claimed to have shot it down but the claim was dismissed because it wasn't close enough to Bradford.
