My last involvement with this was in December 2016. I had to get a covering letter from the next of kin showing I was a co executor. No solicitor was involved. The death will have to be registered with the council. You will be asked how many copies of the certificate you will want. I would say no more than about 5. The registrar for births, deaths and marriages will give you a pack explaining everything with a certificate for burial/cremation. Keep the receipts for reimbursement later on. When you go to the hospital, you might be invited to view you Aunt in the viewing room of the mortuary. It is a personal thing and is something you must decide on yourself. I see the main executor is a solicitor. Let him/her take the lead.

Phil and Jessica
Thanks Phil, I am aware of my duties as the nurse from the hospital explained the next steps to me. Also it’s not yet 3 years since I lost my dad, so the process with certificates and banks is still very familiar to me.
My aunt was in the undertaker’s chapel of rest near the hospital, but will be moved to a nearby branch of the firm. I wasn’t allowed to see her when I went to introduce myself as next of kin yesterday, as the certificate had not been signed. I am going to collect it tomorrow.I am the main exec, the solicitor will just deal with the legal side of things.

If no house is involved then it might be possible to wind up any accounts by using the Statutory Declaration process. We used the process to sort out some of my my late father's accounts and the only cost was the fee which the solicitor charged to witness the signing of the paperwork. Their fees may vary but in our area 17 years ago we were charged £10 per declaration, each declaration being on a single sheet of A4 paper. We obtained 3 or 4 as I recall because each account required its own declaration form at that time. The forms were provided for free by the banks/BS's but the only complication was that there was no common standard as to the value of an account which they would permit the use of the Stat-Dec process. Where one would allow up to say £20,000 another might only allow £5,000. But that was 17 years ago and things might have changed since.

Also you mention the presence of a solicitor in the will and he will be able to better advise. However I would ask him about it for peace of mind particularly if no house is involved, not that he won't be honest but Stat-Dec is much cheaper than probate - and no doubt much less in legal cost too.
Steve, I had already read up on the release of funds etc, there is a house involved in the estate, which will require probate, the solicitor has a copy and will get a copy tomorrow. I have already been told the terms of it.

I’m going to have to take some time off to recharge my batteries Andy, I’m absolutely burned out through working, visiting hospital, seeing my mother etc.
I get really tired very early at the moment, so on that note, goodnight all
