Default Sorry IPK again.......?

To cut a long story short….. A local ex Rover dealer has just replaced my IPK (at there expense) – the fact that they have replaced a white dial IPK with a Cream one with red lights – is immaterial to them a shrug of the shoulders and “It works” was the reply and that when they interrogate the computer for the part number this is the only one that is available???

Obviously I’m not too happy as I liked the white dials – But was willing to put up with this as I now have a working IPK with trip computer (or is it working ok?)

I was on a decent drive at the weekend and noticed the MPG was around 56-58 I was a little surprised with this as 49 – 52 on a long motorway trip was normal in the past – i.e. before this new IPK was fitted. On further investigation I also noted that the Rev counter at idle was sitting at 500 rpm where as before it was 1000 rpm – the car is running just as before with no rough idle etc. Called the said dealer who thinks it must be an engine management system fault as this is where the IPK gets it reading.

Am I just being a tad suspicious or is this a case of once again these guys are trying to get out of fixing the original problem?

Am I right in that the idle speed should be around the 1000 mark
Is this IPK likely to be faulty can a T4 input resolve?
Does the RPM affect the MPG calculation etc?

Grateful for your thoughts..

Regards

David

Whats your rev counter go up to? 6k for a oil burner and 8k for proper fuel (Petrol)

When they connected the T4 they may have re-flashed the ECU with updated firmware. This happened to me. It was about 100 miles before the MPG etc.. was accurate. Not that it's very accurate anyhow.

I have a diesel IPK in my petrol car and the revs will match the IPK not the car so if you have a petrol IPK in a diesel car and the revs look like they are on 8k they are actually on 6k. So a 1k on a petrol IPK would be between 600 and 1000 on a diesel.

Perhaps they updated the ECU software at the same time.

When I went to EXMS the T4 came up stating that it had outdated firmware and would you like to update it. They clicked yes. I have no idea how outdated it was but the car felt a little smoother afterwards and it idled slightly lower. Could be a placebo affect.

You can reset the IPK in the diagnostics screen

1,000 RPM for tickover on a Diesel is way to high.

No, the diesel idle should be 730-830 rpm and is controlled by the ECM and isn't adjustable. If your earlier IPK showed 1,000 rpm, I guess it was faulty.

No. It's caculated from the fuel consumed and the distance travelled. The reported mpg will be quite inaccurate until the computer has collected a large number of data samples. Just let things ride for a few days and the figure will settle to it's best estimate. It will never be exactly correct because the 'fiddle factor' used in its calculations is a default one. You can tweek the factor via IPK diagnostics to get the result closer to reality. However, it's a long drawn out excercise that few would bother doing.

Guys

As ever, many thanks for your inputs thus far.

Just been out to the car park - Car is sitting at idle around the 650 rpm mark - is this too low or what?

Perhaps its time for a service then......?

I'd wait until you've had more time for the ECU to adjust. It will probably have lost it's settings when connected to the T4.

I think about 200 miles is about what I found before it settled down to what I had before.
