Yes, that little sachet of 3M polish doesn't last long, yet there's enough discs for several cars.
I just use ordinary car body polish to seal the headlights - in my case Amorall Shield, seems to do the job. |

I used this Meguires protectant to 'seal' them after I'd restored them. Not cheap but, it'll last for years I guess plus, Mrs mininuts car has got plastic lights too. It says on the bottle to use every three months or so to maintain the protection, I'll do them every time I wax the car.

Left in is fine Lee specially if you tape them up carefully and don't use the high speed on drill it isn't necessary a spray bottle with soapy water is essential though IMHO to ensure surface kept wet.As others have said 3M headlight restoration kit is probably the best and simplest to use and around £17 usually.

Yes, as said, it's an easy job with them in situ, although the face lift lights are probably slightly easier due them not having the divider between the lamps.
Use a good quality masking tape and put at least three layers around the area, one is not enough if you catch the bumper with the edge of the drill attachment.

I cut some 2 inch( ish) wide strips of corrugated cardboard , and jammed this in around the lights ( a lot easier than loads of masking tape). the card will get soggy but last long enough to finish .
