Air intake mk?

I'm finally going to do a more severe intake mod on my CDTi. I already have the mk1 done.

I had planned on cutting off everything in front of the bellows - is that mk3? But while looking at the air intake today, I was wondering if just removing the lower part of the bellows would achieve the same results, while keeping the OEM look of the car, at least at a cursory glance.

Anyone see any problems with this?

Sounds like a good idea. Presumably it won't have seriously different airflow as opposed to the full MKII. If you have problem with altering the standard look of the car then I'd give it a go.
Let us know of course if you find any improvements or otherwise.

If you want it to look oem, why not get a hole cutter and cut holes in the underside of the intake?

I was thinking of that, but I want to get a bigger opening. Also, you could only cut the holes towards the front of the intake where, IMHO, there is a slightly greater chance of water intake from the front of the car.

Why not make a kind of deflector? Incidentally, how big is the opening to the inlet manifold?

Good question - I don't know . Even if it is quite small, the bigger the opening in the intake, then the more air will be forced in.

It'll only suck in as much air as the inlet manifold mouth will allow, I'd have thought. If I were into modding I would, like you want to keep the OEM look so I think that I would look into cutting holes underneath the intake and putting a deflector to divert water etc. Or, thinking aloud, or thinking "atype" you could forget the shield/deflector and get several of those small mushroom type filters you can get and glue them into the holes.

You are probably right about how much air is needed, but I would rather be sure that the required amount is available if needed.

Wouldn't putting more filters back into the holes be a bit counter-productive?

I think all this stuff can be pretty subjective anyway.

I have a spare intake now so I may as well chop it up .
