Default I've been thinking...

VeeKay has the facility for the memory seats to be adjusted according to which key is used.

I'm the only regular driver though, so I was wondering what might be involved to change the function to the boot opener as per the post facelift cars?

Has anybody done it please? CAN it be done?

I don't know but it sounds like a firmware change to me and so highly unlikely ...

Only feasible way I can see is to swap out the BCU. Find one from a newer car but with exactly the same specification as yours. VIN mis-matches would show on a T4 machine but in theory it could work. Anyone else tried this?
