Default CDT oil leak after long fast journey

I remember when bought the car that the drivers side drive shaft had some goo on it. the prev owner said that he monitored it every service (he was on 48,000 a year) but that the garage said dont worry.
Doesnt drop or use any oil, but noticed a small patch under the drivers side over about 4" on the ground, in line with the end of the engine block, I suppose (i.e. parallel to the line of the car) which I should now investigate. I presume a seal starting to leak.. where is a good place to start looking? Now on 158k.
Am I going to need expensive work soon or do these things go on forever...?
