Personally I would say they need to visit my home or a garage of MY choice to assess the damage as once they take the car that is likely the last you will see of it. if at the garage i would be there with it.

Doing anything with the car, other than what you have given them permission to do - is against the law. Just make that abundantly clear to them - it remains your car until you advise them otherwise.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Good advice, and even if you haven't got a dashcam most phones have a record function so switch it on before you get out of the car and talk to the other driver. Just hold it normally in your hand and they won't notice they are being recorded - especially useful if you haven't got an independent witness.

You can go further than that. 1) make them send an independent motor engineer to assess the repair cost. 2) get your own quotes for repairs. 3) finally get them to pay you for the cost of all repairs and commision the repair yourself. 4). if they have accepted all fault then if and only if you really can't do without the car while it's being repaired hire a car (not through the insurance rip-off monkeys) and make sure they agree to pay for that as well. They cannot under any circumstance force you to scrap the vehicle. What they can do however is refuse to pay any more for repairs than the total value of the vehicle.

I was told this by my insurers legal dept (by email)... Makes you wonder why you pay extra for legal cover eh.......
...
The only use for legal cover is for when you are in trouble over an accident.

Make them send an engineer to your home to inspect it.

Quite right - but little help once they've gone too far with it in their posession.

An excellent tip, thanks Mike.

Remember that nothing is obvious to any third party (e.g. insurer/solicitor) looking into an accident so spell every tiny detail out precisely and as clear as you can then sit back and be prepared to settle 50/50 anyway.

One other thing unless absolutely necessary don't under any circumstance claim against your own insurance. Once you do then it's them that will attempt to recover damages from the third party and they are much more likely to settle for a 50/50 than you will and this can affect your premiums later. Claim from the third party insurer directly (or through your legal support).

Good luck.
I think the offending driver could be booked for "driving without due care" even "dangerous driving"
It is a Motorway after all and had they (Police) seen it he certainly have been booked.
Ken.

Many thanks for all the advice, the update is the car went to Manchester to be assessed, they said the assessor didn't do house visits The op's insurer, Direct Line, have been very helpful, putting my mind at rest, saying the car will be returned to me if I want that. The assessor has said the car is now a Cat C car, they have offered me £1000, less £40 for the car, and are bringing it back Monday or Tuesday. I have accepted the offer as I want my car back asap as the courtesy car is tiny. I can now get my suspension checked to see if it repairable. Thanks again, John.

Vehicles written off after an accident, a flood, or fire damage are often classified as Cat C. In its simplest form, it means that although the car is repairable, the cost of the parts, labour and potentially an expensive hire car would significantly exceed the value of the vehicle.

The op's insurance have texted me to say the cheque was posted today, the rear o/s wheel is slightly pointing inwards as if something behind it is bent. I would not know what I was looking at so I will take to my local garage to get checked. Is it likely to be anything serious or major?. Thanks, John.
