Default Probable CANbus fault 2.0 CDTI Tourer

Hi all, I've had the, no rev counter, temp gauge, rear demister fault, intermittently for the last couple of years, but a few weeks ago they all failed again and have not come back to life since. As per advice here on the forum, I have checked for damage and done some continuity testing to the wiring under the front nearside wing and couldn't find any problems. So I have booked in a T4 diagnostic this week to see if there is a problem with the CANbus. If, as is likely, the CANbus is faulty, what are my options. Its a NNN100692. Showing as out of stock on Rimmers site but eye wateringley expensive. Probably nearly as much as the car is worth I'm assuming that the Ex Rover tech, who is doing the diagnostics, would also be able to programme another unit if required.

Might be worth seeing if someone near you has an ECU kit (ECU, EWS and transponder) to fit to the car just to see if the error disappears. If it does then you know where the issue most likely lies. If it doesn't then the issue is elsewhere on the car. I wouldn't recommend using an ECU kit for more than testing to be honest, it would get the car running though.

If the ECU is fried then MarinaBrian is the guy to speak to about repair / replacement, he can do it through the post too.

If I'm not mistaken the rear defrost in on the K-Bus and from what I know the K-bus and canbus meet at the IPK so it could potentially be an ipk failing or an ecu If It does turn out to be canbus or k-bus issue and you cant find a replacement section for the 75 you may as well look at BMW for one the E46 3 series and a few others used the same system finally I'll advise to find a shop with an oscilloscope so they can check the cunbus signals for anomalies

Do you have a fuel burning heater fitted? If so, try unplugging it.

Mine has the K line cut, but if the loose end flaps around I got some strange things like you describe going on. Might be worth checking the wiring to it to see if anything appears exposed and possibly shorting somewhere

Nope it's can messages failure instrument pack 3.

The CANBUS controller is NLA for the NNN100692, and as you point out Rimmer Bros is out of stock of these units.

I have one or two NNN100692SR units on the shelf, and if you would like a plug and play replacement for your defective unit, I can definitely assist or indeed a virgin unit to be coded to the car with T4......and not at Rimmer Bros prices either, as you will be cutting out two middlemen

Drop me a PM if you need to know more.

OK finally got a T4 diagnostic done this week. Will be booking in with garage to check through wiring next week from ems. Certainly looking like it might be the canbus as as IPK3 came up as a fault. Swapped instrument pack with a donor unit and that didn't clear the fault. Also had VIN mismatch with light switch (!?), cambus fault no id, cambus fault no dmer received from ems.
If I need to replace and my Rover specialist cant supply I'll contact marinabrian.

It is not a wiring fault Keith, it is the CANBUS controller within the ECM at fault, there were a batch of NNN100692 ECM produced by Bosch and fitted to 1M model year cars with a variant of IC which causes this exact issue.

VIN mismatch with LSM is a fault which occurs if the mileage store has exceeded 300Km, or the light switch originated from another car, in which case the trip mileage display will read "Err"

Your Rover specialist will not be able to supply a replacement ECM, take a look HERE, also second hand ECM cannot be configured to the car using T4.

It states the item is out of stock, and available to back order, this is because there is no stock available at Xpart, all of their stock I'm currently holding in my workshop as they have placed not one order this year for remanufactured ECM.

So if you want a service exchange ECM, I shall happily supply you one at a wholesale price, cutting out two middlemen and I do not want your ECM as a worn core return.

Trust me I've seen this fault time and time again, usually with Cowley cars, but not exclusively, but mainly 1M rather than 1D cars

Save yourself the cost of further investigation by the garage - you don't need it as Brian has already given you the diagnosis and also the most cost effective way to repair the fault.
