Replacment Turbo on Volvo Penta
Lady Emma had both engines serviced last month.
During the work it was found that the port side engines turbo had seized. As Lady Emma had only been pootling about at river speeds this had not been noticed and also probably contributed to the problem. This friday we are having a reconditioned turbo fitted and also a few other sheduled jobs. One of which is changing the raw water strainers from the Volvo fit originals to Vetus ones. These ones are clear which allow us to visually see that water is running through them without having to shut the sea cocks off and remove the lids. Saturday and Sunday after the work has been carried out, Dad and myself will be doing some high speed runs across Breydon Water to make sure all is running as should. Weather doesn't look too promising but I will try and do some photos and videos and post them on here. Naturally we will be mooring overnight on the Saturday to take on essential supplies....Food and Beer We shall be staying at the Surlingham Ferry Inn should anyone on here want to say hello

Turbo replacement was held up due to wrong gasket being supplied.
It has now been done along with the raw water strainers and all things going to plan we shall be taking Lady Emma out next weekend for a shake down run and beer and food testing session Untitled by Jeff Cranwell, on Flickr Untitled by Jeff Cranwell, on Flickr

Not sure I see any tab washers ?
The turbo unit is direct from Volvo Penta so one would hope it is reconditioned to correct specification.......But then again

The tab washers are to the R.H.S of the picture .They are left loose by the O.E.M for ease of alignment.A thorough engineer should tab them over once fitted .

I’m up at the boat tomorrow so I will take a closer look. Are they just bent over with pliers ? If so I shall do it myself. Cheers, Jeff.

Finally weather and tides allowed me to take Lady Emma out on a shake down run to check all is working with the new turbo and the engine services.
I'm pleased to report all was well. Both engines happily went to WOT (Wide Open Throttle) at 3700rpm and on the return run once I remembered to lift the fenders she slipped through the water very nicely. We had to wait till I had a day off and a low spring tide during daylight hours to allow passage under the Great Yarmouth Bridges. My Brother on deck keeping an eye on proceedings. We have an airdraft of 10ft with our VHF whips and Navigation mast lowered. At low water on a spring tide we had about 12" to spare and around 6" to spare on our return half an hour later.... We won't mention my Brother forgetting to put his life jacket on After passing the bridges it was a right turn under Breydon lift bridge and on to Breydon Water which has no speed limits. A few videos from the speed run.. At least the fenders got a wash on this run The return run...Fenders stowed After all that fun it was time to moor up outside the Acle Bridge Inn to take on much needed refreshments Quick video of Lady Emma doing a slow pass outside the pub,

Brotherly love! But seriously, there have been some sad losses on that stretch over the years (only takes a slip). Rap on the knuckles and tell him to belt up!

Cheers Les,
I sort of thought they would be, not sure how they could be bent over though as they look rather thick/solid!
