So if anybody is prepared to take a bet, I'm open to any challenge.!
I notice the car in question is an automatic, so I am convinced there is skulduggery involved!
You would lose. My son works for a large oil company, and ran his on the ‘best’ petrol. He does approx 25 miles a day going to work and back, and got around 26/28 mpg. When he used to bring his daughter back from uni at Leeds he used to get 37/38 mpg. If he is telling porkies, I will find out because I have just bought it off him and not putting it on the road until at least next March/April when it will have everything that wants doing to it, done. I will then post up what it does to the gallon in my ownership. I do know that when he bought it 10 years ago, coming back from where he bought it he got almost 41 mpg. I know because I was with him, and it was brim to brim. Can not stand these people who believe nothing they are told because it does not match their ‘knowledge’. Sorry.

I don't really much care what you can stand or not. I will bet you that it can't be done. 42 mpg in a V6 auto. No ways!

My best over a tankful is 34.96 mpg, my worst 25.06
My previous V6 was manual & although its highest & lowest were only 1 mpg better the overall average was 32.3 against 29.5 for the auto.

Predictably, I get best mpg on holiday trips in warm weather whilst winter short commutes drag things right down.

If I can find my old notebook I'll have to check what I got out of my A35 :¬)

Most of the time, when I fill up with lpg, I do a quick mental calculation to check everything is ok. Every so often I do a more accurate one with the calculator. Lpg is always a full tank (till the pump switches off). From this I get the mpg or pence per mile calculation. The car starts on petrol but automatically switches to gas within 1/2 mile max (cold engine). Having got the mpg figure for gas, I am able to compare the same journey on petrol if I wish - rarely. Again full tank to brim. I have a fairly frequent 220 mile return journey which is good for these calculations.
The speedo is known to be 10% high. I have over the years (over a total of 4 cars) been able to have a pretty accurate calibration, originally done in comparison to calibrated police cars and marked measured distances.
The figures I have quoted are pretty accurate, but in all honesty I'm not trying to score points - just keeping my costs down so these calculations most of the time are as I said mental calculations at the pump, backed up by more accurate ones occasionally.
Basically my calculation is how much fuel to fill the gas tank; with the trip mileage set to zero at each fill (I use that as the fuel gauge) I can see the mileage done on that fill (not forgetting the % error for the calibration).
As far as petrol/lpg comparison, the industry says multi point lpg injectors (ie 6 of them just like on petrol) are as efficient as petrol running. The earlier single point injection had about 15% difference. I converted my 827 Sterling(s) with the earlier type, and agreed with the 15% difference there. When I got the first 75, I put a new multipoint kit on it, about 12 years ago. I agree that there is no noticeable difference with the new one, with the same mpg on either fuel. Having done 20k miles p.a. (until I retired last year) I've certainly seen the savings, and been well aware of my running costs!
But I still maintain the biggest factor is driving habits, that vacuum gauge on the A30 taught me well.

Edit to add:
When I got my latest 75 last December (petrol only then) I thought, what a well presented and looked after car - and it really turned out to be so. But the journey home from Rochester proved expensive, returning something like 25mpg. (Same spec as the old car, same driver & driving habits....). Over the next few weeks I tinkered with it and fitted the lpg. Best I got in that time was 31mpg. Now I've checked it all out - and I repeat it was a good 'un - it have improved to the sort of figures I usually get.
Now explain that to me?

I don't understand the pence per mile. You should measure in liters or gallons.
Lpg has got a higher calorific value per kg, but is far less dense. Depending on blend, you will always use up to 15 to20 % more volume (liters) of lpg, compared to petrol.
Since lpg is cheaper, it cost less, but your consumption in volume is higher.
That has nothing to do with your injection.
It is simply a function of how much energy you have per gallon.
There is something fundamentally wrong with your calculations.!

Stewart,

Your last post dealt exclusively with LPG. I am interested in your earlier claim that you achieved 42 mpg using petrol only. I asked in post no. 29 if you could explain how you calculated this. I look forward to your reply.

Simon

Sorry, if you want to come in from left field, yapping and snapping at my ankles, it is fine with me, but stick to the discussion, and don't try and change what we are discussing.
I have said I don't think it can be done. You either agree, disagree or put your money where your mouth is.
Don't try and slice the salami and eat it in pieces.

My claim is, was and will be, you can't do 42 mpg in a V6 auto. It is there, hiding in plain sight.

I think the statement is clear enough. And I don't expect you to coast down a hill, tow the car behind a truck or get a long suffering relative to push, - you get my drift?

I don't think you could get that in normal mixed driving but I reckon on a long motorway run at a steady 62 (seems to be when mine settles into top) you'd get 40+
I averaged 34 on holiday in Cornwall and considering the poor mpg I must have got slogging round the local hills and backroads in the tourist traffic I must have got something pretty decent on the motorway.
Next time I'm doing a decent run I'll have to accept the challenge :¬)

Mind you, I came back from Gatwick round the M25 and spent most of the time between standstill and 30mph :¬(

To be honest, I couldn't care less! I just fill it up and enjoy it.
