Just received a mail this morning from a Norwegian friend originally from Rjukan, he was home recently and describes the difference in handling on the entertaining Norwegian roads between his early V6 and later 1.8T - seems the anti-roll bar deletion was not such a good idea. He also agrees that the early car is quieter.

Having had to lift the carpets on a 1999 car and a 2005 to fit the modded compensator, I can assure you that the PPD carpets were far superior in thickness and quality. Having an undertray also helps with sound deadening and keeping the engine and front subframe etc., clean.

Fitting Steve's compensator is one of the jobs I'll have to do when I get the carpet(s) out - I've got a stainless one on the old car which I'll fit to the 2004 car.

Also planning to retro-fit the rear blind too, so there's lots to be done.

Saw a pair of power folds on a early car at the scrapyard last week which I'd dearly love but the thought of removing the doors is a bit daunting, perhaps when I get younger ....

I've never found my 2005 diesel 75 to be quiet and refined. Which is what the car was renowned for when it came out.

Maybe this fact should be included in the Project Drive thread.

If there's one thing that most people notice, it's the noise level. I don't think there's any reference to sound deadening/carpet/underlay quality in the PD listing, yet it had such a significant impact on the car

Thanks to all contributors - seems like what I had heard about the carpet quality differing might well be true, at least I hope so or I'm swopping interiors for no improvement!

T-Cut, found an old thread on org. https://forums.mg-rover.org/mg-zt-ro...worker-107356/ post 11 is interesting "Yes the carpets did change over time. Cowley built cars were built with better materials, but as time went on and the cars were subject to Project DRIVE" ...

Regards

ps. Checked the boot material, seems I was wrong and the thickness of the material is identical

Just swapped my bullet powerfolds for the original 2004 mirrors this weekend, noticed straight away more wind noise above 50

My year 2000 was very quiet, but I put it down to the ''classic ''trim,,fabric seats instead of my later model leather seats,,the material seams to absorb the noise.
Also 17" wheels are noisier than 15" ones.
And Rear parcel shelf noise deadening reduction,,all adds up doesn't it.

would recommend you obtain the powerfolds while you can - they're getting pretty rare. Maybe ask the guys at the yard for help? I forgot undertray - yes, not sure if any sound deadening material can be placed in there, but it helps a bit. I had a V reg PPD conny and the sound was much different to my 2005 model. Be interested to see what improvements you make, please update us when possible :-)

If the wiring were present perhaps I'd be more interested in the powerfolds but checked the main switch yesterday and two pins were vacant. Haven't really investigated the passage into the doors for the wiring but have enough respect for people like Stocktake & Big Russ, if they say it's very difficult getting the wiring in place without removing the doors - then I take it as gospel.

Will update the thread if I find major differences between the 2000 & 2004 sound deadening and the result, but it won't be any time soon as I've got my own repair job (old man's problem) coming up soon and lots of other work before winter sets in.

Regards
