Weather!
I'm ready to change the crankshaft pulley, all the parts have arrived, impact gun and compressor borrowed form my mate, day off work.....
…. and it's raining Two weeks of sunshine and now typically rain. I don't feel the urge to sit in the rain sorting this out, supposed to be dry after lunch so maybe then. |

The last one of these I changed on a diesel automatic took me four hours.....what an absolute pig of a job, and that was with the proper tools too
Anyone who says spragging the starter ring gear with a screwdriver to do the job must have had the bolt slackened off first. Brian |

I've got the starter out plus various other bits just to get to find the bolt on the thing! Didn't really fancy wedging a spanner or screwdriver on the fly wheel, also tried wedging with a pry bar see earlier post. I spoke to cable tie and he said his came undone without needing the locking tool, so i'll see what happens |

Near miss!
Another 3 hours wasted messing round getting nowhere. The compressor that I borrowed decided to fall to bits as the isolate valve blew off in front of me ! .
Due to corrosion inside the ball valve, when I turned the handle, it separated from the the ball at about 100psi and flew past me! Lucky it missed! https://www.sealey.co.uk/product/563...pt-m-x-14bsp-f I've managed to get another this evening and will fix the compressor before I can use it tomorrow. I'm hoping something like this will happen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pueTP6D1TY |

Started the day well and fixed the compressor. My neighbour up the road is moving house and offered me his old Arc stick welder he didn't want anymore, as he'd seen me working with cars and wondered if I wanted it? Thankyou very much, much appreciated.
That's where the good luck ended. Would the crankshaft bolt undo? No it ****** well wouldn't. I spent longer than I care to remember trying to undo it with the impact wrench. No luck it wouldn't budge. I jammed the fly wheel with a 14mm spanner tied to water hose to make sure it didn't drop inside the casing. Worked well it didn't move either! My long breaker bar just flexed and I also tried a 4 foot pole on a t bar. Still nothing doing other than something about to snap or slip Decided I'd had enough and started to rebuild the bits I'd removed to get access to the starter motor, which took ages for me to find the upper bolt. What a brilliant place for the earthing lug!! It's virtually impossible to hold, with all the fuel lines, air hoses, water pipes and flexi conduit in the way! I'm just glad I didn't have fbh in the way. Took ages and then it rained everything got cold, oily, wet and slippery, had to keep going as I couldn't lock the car till I'd finished because the battery was disconnected. Still not sure if the hoses are in right place was getting dark as well. Have another look tomorrow, beers now I give up, I'll have to take it to a garage to get the thing shifted. The joys of motoring |

They can be horrible to remove, sometimes a 3/4" air ratchet powered by a massive air tank is the only way.

Yeah I think it needs something with a bit more grunt than I've got!
Though the snap 1/2" I've borrowed is supposed to be pretty good, it's probably just not enough. I've made use of it and managed to loosen and remove the lower pinch bolt on the front strut while i was there so i should be ok in the future if it needs to come off. will do the other side tomorrow. |

Mine took a 1 inch drive on a 4 ft breaker bar with a further 4 ft of a car tube and still me knees trembled just before it went...
