Default please fit smoke detectors

just heard on the news 4 children dead in a house fire.
No idea if the house had working smoke detectors.

It is your life but please, if you don't have working smoke detectors, please fit them.
Interconnected ones are probably better so if one goes off, they all go off

And if you have them fitted already, remember to test them every week.

While we are talking about alarms, don’t forget CO alarms (carbon monoxide- the silent killer) to protect against leaking fumes from faulty heating systems. Don’t take chances.

Agree. They are not expensive these days. Some now come with 10 year batteries as well. Life saving investment

A definite must in any house nowadays.

Have 2 in our house and on Friday night was awoken to the smell of smoke but no alarm going off. Oops I thought something’s wrong panicked tested alarm which worked but a really strong smell of smoke.couldnt wee it but could smell it.
Darts down stairs and nothing but can still smell it. A quick sniff about couldn’t identify where it was coming from and the thought maybe next door as the fella is away working again so clothes on and outside couldn’t see anything in his house and no smell from his letterbox must have looked weird at 3 in the morning sniffing letterboxes but had to be sure it wasn’t his house on fire.
Had a quick search around out the back and then spotted it was the fella over the back fence with his log burner burning cheap crappy wood that stunk so must have wafted in the windows.

They are life savers.

Here is a scary story for non believers of co and smoke detectors. My ex would always pack a CO detector in her bag if we went away.

We went to stay with her sister one weekend and as soon as we arrived the sensor went off. I checked the battery and it seemed OK. She got very nervous and I opened the window in our room and it stopped going off.

We slept with the window open and the following day I shut the window and within 20 mins it was going off again.

She told her sister who booked an emergency visit from a gas engineer, the boiler had a fault and a leak in the chimney.

The scary part was her sister had a CO detector and her husband had pulled the battery because it kept going off.

that would be funny if it were not so serious. I've heard stories of fires where batteries have been removed from smoke detectors and not replaced.

Cool

I’m renting a house and it has 5 alarms. 3 smoke and 2 CO.

About 10 years ago 2 young chaps living next door were found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.

I test all the alarms once a week and when the letting agent comes round for the 6 monthly check they also check the alarms.

I know the smoke alarm works....................

Smoke detectors in every room and storage space, flame detector in the kitchen... c02 detector near the boiler.. fire extinguishers in kitchen and main bedroom cupboard, fire blanket near cooker and sharp point hammer in boys room so large window can be used as escape to the flat roof, rope ladder stored on flat roof.

3 spare batteries in draw and strong flashlights on both floors...

Call me paranoid but no one is dying on my watch because I missed something...

In my 20s the house next door burned down and I slept through it..... made me think real hard....

I’ve got a couple of rental houses which by law must have a fire alarm on each floor and CO alarm where appropriate. Went to test the alarms in one house and the fire alarm in the sitting room wasn’t working. Opened it to change the battery and no battery. Asked the tenant if he had removed the battery and he said he needed it for his remote control! Fortunately he has moved on.
