Default Gumtree (paypal) scam

How'do folks

this is probably an old scam, however had it tried on me tonight

I advertised a (top quality) Mountain Bike on Gt - i received a txt from "Mike" ...lol...what's your phone number ? "Mike"

the txt asked to email if the bike was still for sale - i emailed and got a msg back

Great! please consider it sold and cancel every other appointment regarding it,i am buying it as gift for my son that just graduated from the college and i am read to pay your full asking price, i have read through the advert and i'm totally satisfied with it and i will be glad if you can get back to me with some pics if available, sadly i won't be able to come for the inspection and pick up due to my present condition now,i loss my hearing and being on a wheelchair but I have a courier agent that will help me to pick it up at your preferred location. Regarding the payment i can only pay via PayPal at the moment and I will be responsible for all the PayPal fee/charges on this transaction kindly get back to me with your PayPal email and the pick up location so that i can inform the courier agent about it now? Awaiting your reply soon

i replied

Hi, unfortunately i don't have a paypal account. and would be looking for a cash sale.

their reply

I do not have access to a cash that is why am using pay pal method..It's very easy and secured...just visitwww.paypal.co.uk and click on sign up, after that you will need to send me the name and email address you have used to registered with PayPal so I can make the payment ASAP.

Good try...... I thought it suspect from the start - thought i'd check a bit first before calling them out - turns out it's a scam that's been around for a while.

so beware of - mikekay01 - and similar scams

Trouble is, some of the more gullible or people who don't use the web much (like my parents) would fall for this.

My dad still thinks he will get the 65,000 that the garden centre says he HAS won when they send their catalogue !!!

Takes all my time to convince him otherwise !!

They will most likely send the money, wait a week, then claim they didn't receive it so that Paypal will refund the money. Which would mean they would get their money back, and the seller be out of pocket and the goods gone.

Paypal is httpS NOT http web site, so probably a dodgy / false paypal website.

So you sign up all your bank/credit card details on there, probably asks for your number on the back of the card as well I would have thought?

The info then goes to who knows who!?

Smile

I had something similar a few years ago when selling my boat.

They worked on an oil rig and were going to pay me full amount plus the transportation costs but I had to pay the transportation costs for them.

I even got a dodgy looking email from paypal showing the money going into my account but being held until transportation cost had been paid.

When I gave them my paypal email of
IwasnotbornyesterdaysoNAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD

I never heard from them again

forgot to mention - the scam is when the courier arrives to collect the item, they will ask for some form of payment and will send an email from what may appear to be "paypal" stating that the money is waiting to be released not exactly sure how this would work - but it is defo a scam

i guess they assume most Gumtree sellers won't already have paypal and won't be familiar with the payment system.

Paul...
