Default starter motor

My 180 has occasionally had a starting issue which up until last week as so intermittent that it did not concern me so much. However, now it is most mornings. When I turn the key starter gives a single click almost like a "spitting' sound. Turn the key again and starter work fine. This morning took a few attempts. Sometimes the starter sounds a little slow. From hot though always starts and never a problem. Battery all ok. Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Sean

Starter itself rarely fails ;

How do you know Sean? Start by charging it externally for 24 hours. Then, if the problem persists, check the solenoid contacts as Mike suggests.

Thanks guys and sorry for late response. Battery all ok Simon as had checked out as suspected that first but thanks for that. Mike, this appears to be a fix to the problem and cheap too thanks. Hopefully starter not too difficult to remove. I'll check out my Haynes manual. Seems this is the issue reading the company website.
Much appreciated
Thanks
Sean

Very straightforward job to do.

Get the airbox out of the way & it's staring you in the face.

You'll probably find three contacts in the kit, you'll only use two but one is a slightly different shape so match them to your old ones (it'll all make sense when stripped)

If you are going to disconnect the battery, make sure you have your radio code handy.

If you have hi-line (satnav/tv) you don't need a code but make sure you follow the shutdown procedure (on here) before disconnecting the battery.

Smashing. Thanks for that. Am I understanding correctly that to remove the starter motor it is from the top rather than crawling about underneath? Certainly be good if it is.

Thanks
Sean

I can confirm it does indeed sound like the solenoid contacts - have done a few sets on my Rovers over the years. Nice cheap, easy fix.

Yes Sean, you are correct. If I remember right, when I did mine I took the battery box out too. Undo the bolts. A little wiggle & she should come out sideways.

My 180 had this problem, one of those kits cured it. Three bolts, one is a bit awkward. Battery and tray has to come out.
