First off I am 33 years old...........

Call me a child of the future but I have never got olde worlde measures.... why use inch and 4/32 instead of say 60mm.
I realise It's just me thick but I have never got my head round it, (and I was a mechanic for years on land rovers and lorrys which were all AF) All I could do was 1/2"=13mm 11/16=17mm

I really do wish someone could teach me (not joking)

Sorry mate 33 years old, too long in the tooth now, funnily enough my great nephew 11 years, understands feet and inches but not metres and centimetres. Go figure

Joking aside now the metric way makes more sense than imperial and is easier to learn. The problem I have is that I went to school when it was all changing. I understand MPG, MPH, Gallons, Pints, Pounds and Ounces alot better than their metric equivalent. Feet and Inches too but I prefer to measure things out using Cm's because it's far easier to divide by 10.

Having only ten fingers and thumbs makes metric a lot easier to deal with. For those of us with twelve the older systems are more appropriate.

New question.
Why was shilling always a shilling and rarely if ever a bob, whereas any higher numbers of shillings were always bobs but described as bob singular, 2 bob, 3 bob etc up to 19 then a break to 22 bob I presume because a quid or nicker and guinea were more useful, and onward to 59 bob but AFAIR no higher. Excluding 40/- as this was 2 quid (singular) or nicker (singular).

I hope all you youngsters are taking notes, I'll be asking questions later

Oooo I'm fair worn out now, need a lie down. Thinking is very hard work

5 bob bits were a little before my time. I'm not that old, "yet"

That reminds me I missed out 2 bob bits in my last post.
