Just got a quote and I am still a bit apprehensive -

Diagnostic + 3.5 hrs + thermostat + coolant ~ 274 (incl VAT)

Update for everyone who helped and those who find this thread through search -

Flushed the entire radiator system etc. It was fine. Then, changed the thermostat and now she runs happily at 89-93

And was the thermo stuck shut??????? My money would have been on a failed water pump..

Judging by the drawings, there is no access after the thermo, i.e. once it opens, the best you can do is check the top hose to the radiator when the coolant leaves the engine en route to the rad...

Yes it was. We took it out and poured boiling water over it to get no movement. The new one moved much faster and quite a bit.

And there you have it! Although the majority of diesel thermostats fail to close, this one failed to open. Car maintenance is full of surprises, isn't it James?
