I was in the ATC for years, longer than I should have been really but my father knew the local Squadron Leader so I joined younger than I should have. I joined 1016 Berwick On Tweed Squadron but was in three Squadrons altogether as we moved around, finished up as a Flight Sergeant. Strangely gliding was never something that came up but clocked plenty of hours in other aircraft.

The Berwick Squadron was good in that it was the TA hall we met in and it had a 25 yard indoor range attached. I represented Northumberland in rifle shooting (.22), regularly got high 90s out of 100, got 99 on several occasions but frustratingly never got the 100!

What needs to be remembered is the aircraft performed EXACTLY as it was designed to in an emergency. A possible fault with the system was detected, the flight crew were informed and - in accordance with trained emergency procedures - successfully landed the aircraft and led a prompt evacuation resulting in no casualties or substantive damage to the aircraft.

The mention of other faults are by the by - the windscreen crack and the fuel leak whilst ominous-sounding weren't serious in that they didn't directly endanger the aircraft whilst in-flight. The battery problem, however, has now appeared three times on three different 787s in service with two different airlines.

Bearing in mind this is the first commercial aircraft to operate with a large Li-Ion battery, it could well point to a fundamental failing in the technology that might need to be addressed.

Interestingly, Air India and United Airlines are continuing service with their 787s.

We'll have to wait for the NTSB/FAA investigation to get additional facts and conclusions.

So you're saying you wouldn't be fazed at all if you had been on board? And nor should the other passengers?

Obviously you've had this happen to you on occasions before and doesn't worry in the least anymore.....

Spoken like a true pilot! Especially since they don't have to put it back together when they're done!
