1.8T coolant hoses keep splitting
Hi brothers car has just had its head done and new turbo and since then has had 2 coolant hoses split, any ideas if there is a fault or just a coincidence and old age ?
Thanks

I would replace all the hoses with new to rule out age / OAT degradation and go from there.

Thanks he came up with a thought of a blocked oil cooler causing an increase in pressure, so we can assume it’s just old age then

If its not aged hoses, it could be pressurising of the cooling system, do you know if the hoses felt hard before they split?

No really soft when we were bleeding the coolant I was squeezing the hoses and the top hose was just the same as the one from the Tee to the stat that had burst soft rubber

Oil (once the elastomer bead bond on the head gasket is broken enters the cooling system) is wonderful at swelling up and weakening the hose material EPDM, this coupled with the inferior manufacturing (like a rolly polly) process on the dimpled turbo model coolant hoses can lead to early failure. Your better obtaining the later SAIC smooth one piece hoses which are more rugged although are still made with EPDM and will still swell when exposed to hydrocarbons.

It's interesting that it always seems to be the 1.8T which suffers hose failure. I don't know the answer but I'd say Lovel's theory shouldn't be ignored.
By the way, as for the "old age" argument, all the hoses on my 1999 KV6 are original. What's more, I've never had a coolant hose failure on my SD1 either and they are 35 years old now! Simon

Dow Corning silicon grease is perfect for these applications on the o-ring and sealing surface. No scraped knuckles when trying to remove and so easy to instal. Provides some form of barrier to the elastomer too. I use it On equipment at elevated temperatures and pressures with nasty fluids, but off course my stuff has usually double o-ring and peek trapezoidal back up rings.
