Default Bonnet will not open

After 7 years happy and largely untroubled motoring with 2 great 75s, I've encountered my first out of the norm problem. When I went to open my bonnet this morning for the weekly coolant check the release handle pulled up all the way, is now slack, and the bonnet is firmly shut.

I realise that there are many out there who drive happily around without ever checking under the bonnet, which only gets opened when it is service time, but that's not me.

Can anyone offer any tips please?
