Had me a mess about.
As suggested I checked to see if everything was connected.
It wasn't the blue connector wasn't plugged in.
When I plugged it in the red light came on the disk holder.
I pressed the eject button and a disk came out.
The date on the disk was 2006/2007
Got in the car and sure enough Navigation came up on screen.
I put works address in and a map and directions came up.
Dead chuffed with all that and THANKYOU to ALL that advised me.

Another few questions now springs to mind.
1) Will the 2006/2007 disk be ok to use?
2) Is there a more up to date disk for my system, if so what date is it up to?
3) Where am I able to get this up to date disk and how much can I expect to pay?

Thank you Al.

Yes, the 2006/2007 disc will be ok to use but bear in mind that any road alterations made since then will not be on it.

The most recent official disc I know of is 2009-2010. Navteq was the original supplier, then VDO Dayton and Tele Atlas joined in.
Tele Atlas discs don't include TMC, Traffic Message Channel. This is data encoded onto Classic FM and Smooth Radio stations. It shows live traffic information as symbols on the map, primarily queues and road closures. It is free of charge.

If I were you I would Google those three suppliers and see if anything is available now. Somehow I doubt it because people use their smartphones now and don't want to pay £80 for a CD.

Mine is even older, sometimes inconvenient not having all the latest info but it is what it is. Getting the very latest CD disc will still only offer you 9 year old data other than if you manage to get Traffic Master/Classic FM live updates (some members reckon this is still supported, others say it isn't).
The other OEM type option is to fit a BMW Mk4 (DVD) sat nav disc reader which is plug and play. The discs for these drives are still updated/re-issued but you have to buy them and you will not get the full benefit of the newer 3D displays etc. unless you upgrade to a BMW 16:9 widescreen and BMW TV module (or a hybrid TV module) all of which are plug and play but even as pre-owned kit, will set you back north of a few hundred quid.
Unless you are really fussed about the look, I'd use your Iphone and a nice holder which used as sat nav is far superior and spot on up to date.

One final point, the previous owner may have disconnected the unit as it drained the battery over a period of days. This is caused by the unit not shutting down when you turn off the car.

To test this open the boot and drivers door whilst the ign is on and then remove the keys.

You can either close or leave open the drivers door it makes no difference.

Go to the back of the car with the boot open and observe the red light on the satnav unit. DO NOT open or close any doors or the bonnet. the light on the satnav unit should flash, then the flashing increases speed for a short time and then the light goes out. It can take around 5 mins but if the light doesn't go out then that is the reason the unit was unplugged.

As this is a BMW based unit I believe work in the mk 3 unit which is also used in the E39 BMW

The cd disk on my mk3 unit is Navtec 2014/15

This business of the system not shutting down.
Would it be best to play safe and unplug the system and plug it back in when you need to use the SatNav?

Did you do as Dave suggested, open the boot and watch the red LED on the drive unit, after about 5 minutes the LED should go out, if not, that is why it was not connected in the first place.

Just to clarify, these are separate systems.

Trafficmaster relied upon roadside sensors and displayed warnings in the instrument binnacle's 'Message Centre'. It no longer operates.

Traffic Message Channel (TMC) gets its information directly from highway authorities, transmits it encoded on Classic FM and Smooth Radio, and it is displayed on the hi-line centre console sat. nav. screen. This system is very much still alive and kicking but you do need a disc which is compatible.

I believe TMC is transmitted on the Classic FM frequency. As I have a single channel tuner the TMC at the bottom of the screen is red when I listen to the radio ( never listen to Classic FM) But when I listen to Cassette or CD then the TMC at the bottom of the screen turns green.
