Default Diesel Water Pump

Just got back from garage and they told me the reason my radiator fan is not coming on is that there is no water circulating. All warm water at the top and cold at the bottom end.

They suggest that I change the Thermostat( thats just been done) and the Water pump but they want 3 hours to strip it and have a look ( I have to pay for that) before they can get the warranty company to authorise a repair.

The question i have is that would a failed water pump stop the rad fan comming on? They did say they could not be sure as they could not get a hand on the water pump.

Any suggestions?

The radiator fan not coming on is more likely to be a faulty fan motor rather than anything else.

Have they tried to get the fan to work directly by using a seperate feed from the battery?

Sounds like they haven't a clue try and see if the warrenty company will deal with the other garages Col suggested in the other post.

If you select demist in econ mode, the fan should start..

Why didn't the people who changed the thermostat notice the water pump wasn't working? (if that's true) It's part of the same unit..

The waterpumps on the diesels don't normally cause problems.

The M47 diesel can take an age to warm up properly far, far longer than the petrol models because they are a very thermally efficiant engine.

In this weather with it just ticking over it can take 10-15 minutes to get up to temperature. They may not be leaving it long enough

You can use the on board diagnostic display in the IPK to give an accurate temperature readout (see T-cut's recent post) then wait until the temperature gets to the point when the thermostat opens (88C) then see if the radiator core gets hot. If it does then the coolant is circulating normally.

Continue if it is and wait to see if the fan cuts in (often the lower speeds fail but the high speed often still works)

Low speed = 100C Medium speed = 106C High speed = 112C

Just been out and felt the radiator its hot at the top and cold at the bottom the bottom pipes are cool as well. Dont know but to me this sounds more like a blockage.

just take the rad cap off with the engine running and you will see the (if working) the by-pass coolant from the engine flowing in to the header tank on the top left of it - get someone to rev the engine and the flow in to the header tank will increase with increase in revs
