Default ABS Fault - T4 Reports..

Just recently, our ABS warning light came on.

We took it along to a former MG Rover garage and they hooked it up for us.

It told him that our rear n/s was the culprit.

Incidently, the Sat Nav also stopped working.
Through the great posts on here, we checked out the GPS service menu and found that the wheel sensor field showed zero too?

The garage replaced the duff sensor and as soon as he hooked up the T4 again, the same problem was there ..*-(

We asked him what he suggested and he said it may be a wiring loom issue and estimated a £800+ bill - cars not even worth that now!

We declined his quote and are now left with the predicament of trying to sort it ourselves.. mmmm

Just a point, the Sat Nav will calcalate our route ok but we are not not shown as a moving blue triangle and the arrow orientated display on the monitor has too disappeared. The voice prompts too are silent!

All help greatly welcome

I think the next time you use the car the ABS warning will have disappeared.

You can adjust that in the sat. nav. menu.

take the bulb out. no abs fault ever again!!!!!!!!!!

Edit:- This sort of suggestion is in no way helpful. Covering up a fault can be a recipe for disaster. Please refrain from doing so in future.

Did the garage at least check the visible nsr wiring? Chafing of loose cabling is a frequently-reported fault. The simple sensor test is usually continuity/resistance: if the sensor shows OK, a test from the ECU end would confirm whether wiring was at fault. I assume garage would have wiring diagrams. I think ABS ECU is in the passenger footwell area. It wouldn't cost £800 to run a single new cable - why replace the complete loom? Sounds like he's telling you to go away. Go to auto electrician if garage confirms diagnosis - or just go anyway to get them to check and repair the wiring. Could even be just a bad connection at the ECU (or sensor).

Did the light come on (or rather, remain on) at starting, or when moving?

I have seen a report that says left side rear ABS sensor is the one that feeds into the satnav. The owner turned the wheel (off the ground) and watched the satnav count. Alternatively, the ABS ECU might not be reporting data while the fault exists. either way, you'll get no speed indication until the fault is fixed.

Loss of ABS doesn't make a car unsafe, as long as you always drive with adequate normal braking distance. If the lamp doesn't go out after ignition, it would fail MoT.

""Did the light come on (or rather, remain on) at starting, or when moving?""

As soon as ignition is turned, it undertakes its electronic checks then reports Traction Control and then ABS Warning Light remains on. It is the only light that remains on when engine is running.

My hubby actually saw the mechanic inside of the vehicle connecting a blue tipped lead (assume new sensor) underneath the passenger seat.

The NSR wiring is not chaffed, the lead is new now.

From our reading Moonstone, it appears that Sat Nav does indeed use this signal from the sensor.

We assume that the sensor connects under the seat and from there a wire or loom takes it to the ECU unit or Abs Unit..

I appreciate its ok to drive but you must admit, its always nice driving without these niggling problems... *-(

Just hope we can get to the bottom of it..

Sounds to me like the sensor hasn't been fitted correctly or damaged on installation

I think it was Duotone who traced the speed sensor wire back to its source. He should be along this evening if not Why not PM him, He may even be attending the next Yorkshire meet

Still think my 1st sentence is most likely, I understand they are difficult to get out and you have to take care not to damage the housing.

Thanks Stock, i hope so...

My concerns are that it could be very very expensive and the car becomes neg equity (though we've had it from new and at £27K Sept 2001, we've already seen mass depreciation..lol)

Someone suggested hubby remove battery & box and check the wires under there.. that seems the next stage, when it is a little dryer...

And you never know, i might even pop over to Yorks lol
