Handbrake compensator
As im fairly new to 75 ownership, what does the compensator actually do, i thought if the handbrake needed adjusted, all it needed was a screwdriver though the hole in the hub to adjust the cog a couple of notches, 5 min job maybe

I'm probably wrong, but i think the compensator is supposed to ensure it pulls the same on both sides.

the compensator allows the two handbrake cables to be pull the shoes with equal pressure/exertion to allow or rather 'compensate' for wear. It pivots at the compensator block, which allows for the linear movement of the single cable at the handle.

The reason this compensator is unnecessarly complicated, is because it attempts to accomodate (cable) movement around several axes when it's not absolutely necessary. A simple straight bar with a hole in the middle and one at each end would do - and many cars have exactly that. But this gismo tries to do more. Basically, it is just too clever for its own boots and as an excercise in design falls flat on its nose. Basically, it separates rotational movement in the primary cable from the equaliser bar by using a kind of universal joint between them. The underlying reason for it is that cable rotation might occur when an adjustment is made at the threaded end under the hand lever. The cable doesn't need to turn to adjust it because there's a free nut on the cable's end thread. But it might end up rotated slightly and rather than the nipple turning to accomodate it, the universal joint takes it up. There's nothing wong with the idea in principle, but the way MGR constructed it is laughable. Several owners came up with far better designs when the compensator issue was a hot topic.
