Difficult to hide a slipping clutch especially if there is a fluid leak causing it

Take a good look at the pedal box any tell tale signs of a recent master cylinder top up dribbles on the pedals etc.

Obvious thing, do check your friend does not ride the clutch

If your freind is spending that sort of money, walk away and have a good look around and be prepared to travel, for that and perhaps a tad more you will find the right one for you, good luck.

Default Road testing a clutch

Quick way of testing for clutch slip (on any car) which I've "exposed" to many owners/sellers on a test drive is to drive along in 3rd gear between 3000 & 4000 revs, depending on where the power band is, then press the clutch pedal lightly, now "floor" the throttle, while removing foot off the clutch completely.

The duff slipping clutch:
Engine will carry on revving with little or no increase in road speed and rev counter (if fitted) will be out of step with the speedo.

A good clutch:
Engine revs will continue to be "locked" relative to the rate the speedo increases.

Alternative method (if it's not your car yet!) is to simply try moving off in third gear.
Good clutch will stall the car!

Duff clutch will slip and eventually start moving the car forward.

It's amazing how many sales people (or owners trying to sell) are surprised when I break the news that their clutch is on the way out.
