Default Were Kenwood MD players an option on the ZT?

My ZT's got a kenwood minidisc player fitted with a cd changer in the boot. Now the changer seams to have given up the ghost and i didnt get the cartrige with the car so its pretty much scrap and i have no use for the minidisc player.

So i was going to put the cd player out of my old car in the ZT as its a pretty top spec one, but the steering wheel controls work with the kenwood player. So i was just wondering do they work becuase its a factory stereo or has someone bought one of the aftermarket leads for it that allow you to use the wheel controls on aftermarket headunits? I hope the latter is right as that means i should be able to plug the lead into my new stereo.
