Evening all, Been train driving again not very successfully though Been down the south west Bob's neck o the woods on the Riviera line driving a castle class steam train, ran out of bleedin' water eh! lol Ooops!
Back to training/tutorial school for me then. Bottle of cider time I think.

Before I went through the BR driver training, when I was still a 2nd man, I received training as a steam fireman and fired several main line steam excursions. With the real thing, if the water in the boiler is allowed to drop too low and expose the top of the firebox a fuseable plug (bolt with a low melting point core) would melt and a jet of steam would blast into the firebox. If that happened the only thing that could be done was to stop and drop the fire before the loco turned into a bomb! Trying to top the boiler up was pointless as the fuseable plug had "gone".

Talking about internal combustion engines. In the driver training the basic loco up here was the class 47, 12 cylinder double bank (6 & 6). You went into it in great depth. One of the useless bits of info that has stuck in my mind is the firing order! 624153 on "A" bank, 153624 on "B" bank.
