Ireland opts for 2030 combustion ban
I see Ireland has jumped on the ICE ban a whole decade earlier than the UK and wants a ban starting in 2030, I've been reading about Ireland's ban this morning & one paragraph in this report is very worrying.
"The environmental plan also added measures to limit the use of old vehicles, and levy fees on “the production of materials that are difficult to recycle”. In addition to banning the sale of new fossil fuel cars, the government said it would stop granting National Car Test (NCT) certificates to such vehicles by 2045." https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/18...ombustion-ban/

Cars over 39 years old are exempt the NCT so that will be interesting.
I wonder if hybrids will still be aloud? Interesting times ahead for all of us I think. |

How "difficult" and/or cost effective is it to recycle the components of the "new" electric vehicles?

Batteries are now expected to outlast the rest of the car, i.e. not drop below 70% capacity for at least 15 years. They are then eminently suitable for repurposing as grid storage - even a degraded first generation Nissan Leaf battery (which was less durable than those in production today) would be able to store at least 36 hours' worth of electricity demand for the average household.

It's part of the reason why electric cars are so slow to depreciate (in fact, over the past year or so used ones have been appreciating in value) - even if the rest of the car were to be written off, a degraded but undamaged battery pack would still be worth thousands. They are a commodity.
