Default Holed K series engine

Hi
Whilst at my local garage today sorting out a replacement shot spring for my car I noticed a rather sad looking K series engine sitting next to an 04 plate freelander. I asked the mechanic had it been a victim of a overcooked head gasket failure. Surprisingly he said no. He said it had lost compression on cylinder 4 and when they cracked the head off they discovered a wacking big hole in the piston crown. I had a good look and sure enough I could fit my thumb through it. They decided to get a replacement engine for it as it was more cost effective. They had no idea why it failed in such a way either.

I've replaced two k-series engines over the years with holed Pistons. Both were the result of serious overheating though. The one had got that got the inlet manifold had melted to the head as well.

It can happen if there's a restriction or no fuel getting to a cylinder. Could have been as simple as a blocked injector.
