Yep Mike they aren't all like this - you should have bought a proper one!

I found the best solution for me - trown out the genuine cig lighter with the base and replaced it with this one.
And I use this set of cables with magnetic stuff.
One of the most comfortable sets I use in the car...

I would agree, when I see the quoted hours to some jobs on some modern cars I do wonder if the manufacturers have done it on purpose. Land Rovers seem to need the body removed from the chassis on some models for a Turbo or EGR replacement and all that they needed to do was put in an access panel when they were designed.

If you think they are bad on these try doing one on a RHD Saab 9-5.
