Quote I can't belive 48 hours soaked in new undiluted battery acid had no effect at all

Now, had you accidentally dripped that on your front wing I'd bet my last dollar that it would have stripped it right down to bare metal.....

No, it wouldn't do that. The reason is that battery acid (and caustic soda solution for that matter) are aqueous. No easily obtained water based 'stripper' is likely to remove the paint (presumably acrylic). Caustic will remove 'oil' paints and varnishes, but won't touch polymers. It will require an organic solvent such as methylene chloride (eg. Nitromors) or ethylene glycol (antifreeze/brake fluid) to even get under the surface. The problem is, any solvent that softens the paint is likely to soften the plastic covers as well cos the covers and the paint are very similar, chemically speaking. If the 'chrome' can't be added on top of the existing covers, I fear it's probably a lost cause.

Default chrome mirror covers

Hello.Bought a shed load of mirror covers ages ago.Now in the process of rubbing them down with fine wet and dry.All you need to do is take the shine off.Use grey primer, then buy some good quality chrome spray paint.Have got a decent end result .PAINT PREPERATION IS THE KEY.Will try and sell these on.Its not the real thing but a lot cheaper.I Took some ordinary painted covers to a boot sale a few weeks ago and people were asking have you got the chrome ones. They were saying they wanted the chrome ones, but were a bit shocked by the price. You never know might be on to a winner (Got to try it).Cheers darren

Let me know how you get on, I tried spraying some with chrome paint, they looked good but when you lightly polish them (as owners would) the chrome effect comes off and your left with grey.

If it works for you then you can but a shed load more painted ones from me if you like.

Good luck with it,

Think i got mine from you anyway, purchased off ebay.Came down from birmingham one day.Loaded up boot and back seat.Thinking of using a pair i've done has guinee pigs and of buying some clear high gloss laquer, and see what the results are.Might add a bit more protection and sheen or might turn into a complete disaster.Got to try it.When i bought that job lot off you, started to sell them on ebay for £15 a set with free post, they flew off the shelf. Now sales dried up,so trying the chrome effect.Cheers darren

Good luck with it mate, I only wish I had the time to do the same, if you do manage to get a good finish on them I expect you could get as much as £50.00 per set on eBay.
