Is there a possibility that the friction plate has been fitted wrong way round? My mate did that and the symptoms were the same - stiff pedal and not disengaging properly. Was a diffrent car, but it could be similar?

I suspected the centre plate in the wrong way around too but the OP said the clutch improved for a few days after fitting a new master cylinder.
If the plate was in the wrong way around, it would be like it from the start & not change. I can see where you're coming from though. It definately seems like the box needs to be removed again. |

No chance it's a faulty master?

Bubs, I know this will not help you but whatever the outcome is will be of great benefit to other forum members. Hopefully you'll soon be reflecting on this with a cuppa and not at the end of your tether as you currently are.

thanks for the suggestions, the friction plate comes attached to the spring plate so cannot be put in the wrong way thankfully.
Update on progress. After managing to get the car into gear once warm, i limped it my parents house yesterday and stripped the car down. Andy was kind enough to let me call him and pick his brains as to what i should be expecting and offered to have a look at my findings when i get inside. This morning I managed to get to inside the bell housing. On first glance the slave face seems to have broken away from the back section. I thought it may have done that when I was taking the gearbox out but when I took the slave out it looks like the spring has been burning into the plastic on the side of the face which could only happen with the engine running. The little clips on the side of the back section seem to have rounded off and not holding the face on. I bugged Andy again and checked that the clutch plate I had was for a diesel so I'm in the process of putting it back together. The clutch pedal seems to be more "springy" now and not as hard as before so i'm hoping it's ok and the problem was a failed slave. Last edited by bubs; 13th April 2013 at 18:17.. |

The centre plate/drive plate can indeed be put in the wrong way around as one side (centre boss) protrudes more than the other.
Glad you found the problem though, good luck with refitting. |
