Dave, if you're really feeling adventurous I've seen people open tablets and wire an external GPS in place of the internal one. It'd be a gentler strain on the tablet's resources too.

Adventure already done mate. Opened it up and popped on an antenna but its down to the chipset. Its pants and well known as a pile of poop. Made zero difference. The tablet is wired to a 12v supply GPS unit into the car, to get around this issue.

Put an external antenna on, using existing connection on motherboard. Made no difference.

Quick update. I was looking at the install yesterday and wanted to be able to turn the unit on/off with the power button.

I can access what I have made from under the eyebrow and its out of sight, do does not stick out like a sore thumb

I used a length of springy wire (from my RC helicopter spares box ). Bent to shape and attached to the rear with some VERY strong tape (3M VHB for any one interested).

The power button now operates easily by pulling down gently on the little widget

Seen from behind - not pretty but you will never see this

If you are looking at the install, the physical bit is the easy part. Getting all the software working and tethering to my Android phone was another story.

I'm not aware you can do this with an i-phone but if someone wants to prove me wrong, could you please do a "how to" for tethering and bluetooth for the GPS, etc. for an android device.

Cheers,

Dave

I had a question about tethering the I-phone to this tab. You need to do this via bluetooth to share the GPS, as the GPS chipset on the unit is a bit naff. Works instantly via Android but I have never touched an i-phone. I know you can wifi tether but this will not give GPS as far as I am aware.
