I would have thought a snapped crank would have done a bit more than just make a strange noise. Surely the engine would have stopped instantly at the very least. That’s a pretty catastrophic failure.

1 the car was driven through deep water at speed, and the engine ingested water causing hydraulic locking, most unlikely scenario 2 The ecu has failed due to water ingress, the plenums were blocked, and the tide mark was well up the ecu, perhaps a more realistic scenario is ane of the injectors was held open causing unburnt fuel to build up in the cylinder bore causing hydraulic locking. Now these fault codes would not clear on the original ecu and the fuel pumpwas not running, however a replacement DDE4 slaved to the car during the diagnostic, cleared all but the incremental angle sensor fault. Upon cranking the car once I had charged the battery, it sounded to have compression on two cylinders, and a visual check revealed the auxiliary belt to be static while the engine was being cranked. My opinion is the crankshaft has broken in the centre journal. Having said all of this, Gary has indeed bagged himself an absolute bargain, the car itself is immaculate and deserves to be returned to the road. Here is the plenum, after almost a week of dry weather, and a cursory attempted rodding of the drain with a screwdriver, a bold reminder of the importance of this simple check. Brian |

Just noticed you are only a few miles up the road from me Gary.
If you need an extra pair of hands during the engine swap give me a shout. |
