If you compsre the ODO on the sat nav with the car you will find they are very simimilar if not identical, the car's speedo is set wrong on purpose so it will always read higher, in fact the needle is correct its the numbers behind that are in the wrong place

The needle deflects as directed by the ECU, any set of numbers can placed behind it in any configuration or spacing the manufacturer prefers, only by placing a correctly calibrated set of numbers behind the needle as in Police cars can the needle be interpreted correctly, the needle will always be at the same position at any given speed whatever the numbers behind.

You don't need to play about with dial. As you say the ECU tells the needle where to go. It tells it to read a higher speed than the car is going by around 5%. The sat nav will give the right speed.
The ECU takes its info from the wheel sensor and so the speedo readout varies throughout the life of the tyre as its rolling diameter decreases with wear. Colvert. |

The only way to measure mpg is by doing a brim to brim test, anything else is a waste of time..
