It costs more in fuel to coast though - when the diesels are being driven by the gearbox the injectors turn off once a preset rpm is reached.

You can test when they are working using the radio set to long wave and tuned to a weak station. The background interference you hear is the injectors firing.

Mike, surely if you are tuning in on Long Wave you mean using the wireless?

Or radiogram?

Yep the Symphony wireless!

Very useful when driving down through France for catching up on The Archers on Radio 4.

I have got used to coasting in my Mitsubishi auto diesel, I change down with the shifter if I want engine braking. I didn't like the Audi changing down when I lifted off - I don't do that in my manual, not until it's slowed enough to need a lower gear to drive in, or unless I actually want engine braking.

I did'nt expect so many positive reactions for the automatic because some years ago i could drive a ZT diesel automatic; to get some power my right foot was all the time at the botom, inclusive a terrible noise of the engine..
The Rover 2.5 had a little bit the same but less noise...
In the good old days the Rover dealer had enough different cars to test the difference between manual and automatic but nowadays they have Kia's or other Korean cars and sometimes they have a Rover or ZT.
The Automatic gives a more pleasant way to drive( most reactions ) so an Automatic is a good choice, i learn on the first of novenmber...

Many Thanks for the reactions.....

The OP is referring to the Rover 75 diesel automatic.
I have one of those together with a manual V6 (which is more pleasant to drive IMHO).

I have nothing against automatic gearboxes, but I dislike the way that the Rover 75 diesel auto "coasts" when slowing down.
When SWMBO drove it first, she said that there is something wrong with it, as it keeps dropping into neutral when slowing down.
A fairly good description of how it feels.

You get used to it and have to manually select the gears more often.
I suppose it was meant to be a fuel saving feature - The V6 autos don't do it.

That's the thing I really didn't like at first as well and also when you are going down a gentle(ish) hill you usually have to manually make it change down otherwise you are just coasting. If I drive an automatic I want it to do that kind of thing itself rather then me having to use the shifter.

On the flip side after driving the car for about 6 months, in circumstances other than the above, I could pretty much get it to shift down whenever I wanted it to just by 'nudging' the accelerator - I don't mean the full pedal to the floor kickdown - and I found it fine once I had figured that out.

there have been moments when i'd have liked an Auto - Only when dealing with the traffic in the city centre tho.

where I live and the roads i drive regularly an Auto would NOT be a Good choice for me - even my Mother with arthritis and 2 Titanium Knees prefers to drive a Manual

I wouldn't trust an Auto on some of the steeper Inclines i've driven with my Car - my Brother in law once jumped out of an HGV driven by his Brother as the Auto box kept upshifting on a steep climb causing some bum clenching moments

Considering what he used to do for a living, that's not as strange as it sounds
