I absolutely despair at some of the spelling and grammar that I see on here (and other forums it must be said, it's certainly not limited to this one).

Whilst some may be excused as they're using phones, even they these days have a full "Qwerty" keyboard, so there's really no excuse for doing things like using "u" instead of 'you' or "ur" instead of 'your' (or you're). It's just pure laziness and makes me wonder if I can be bothered to read a post, even if it's a valid opinion I'm likely to dismiss it because of the standard of English used.

When I was at school, I too was subject to a far more disciplined way of learning, especially in English and maths lessons, and mistakes were punished swiftly and usually in front of the whole class, so you tended to try harder not to make them in the first place lest you be hauled, usually by the ear lobe, to the front of the class.

As harsh as that may sound, it meant that every person in that class tried their utmost not to make any mistakes, and that's something that's stayed with me ever since.

Besides which, most modern technology be it phone, tablet or computer comes with built in spell checkers, so there's really no excuse. Although, of course, they can't really help with grammar.
Ooh harsh. Whilst I try my best and I much prefer to read properly written English, on an Internet forum I'm really not precious about it nor does it makes the authors opinion any less valid.

I don't disagree about the authors opinion in the slightest. I'm sure that most have a perfectly valid point to make. The point that I was trying to make however, was that it's hard to read, and for some no doubt, hard to understand.

This club is blessed with a number of members that are of, let's say, an elderly persuasion , some of them won't understand "txt tlk", which would make it impossible (or at least very hard) for them to form a response to what might just be a question that they could otherwise help with. I notice that Google Translate doesn't have an option to translate, what to some, will be gibberish.

Not trying to be harsh or precious either.

It seems to be only the lower classes who routinely abuse the language, dropping 'H''s and so forth - too much time glued to the colour television set perhaps?

I reckon it's spoken language -v- written...

Should have = Should've.

When spoken, 'should've' can sound very like 'should of'.
No harm in that!

But when written.... 'Should of' is just plain wrong!

It's a bit like the (apparent?) interchangeability of you're (= 'you are') with your, or their, there & they're (= they are)!

Spoke it's fine, you get the meaning from context.
Written? Well, words do have meaning..!

Stream of consciousness stuff on a forum doesn't matter too much (see what I did there? Doesn't = does not ), but txt speak is just annoying & lazy...

Anyway...
