"98% of the population, as evidenced by this thread, don't realise - or do, but don't care how much data about them can be used to profit others, at the expense of the person who the data is about".

Can you give us a plausible example of how this might happen? I'm genuinely intrigued by your continued worrying.

Pete

The new system will show what you're entitled to drive, any points on your license, and any medical restrictions on the license? How will any of that aid in identity theft? Or in fact make other people money at your expense?

Surely the bit they'd be interested in for identity theft is the part where you request a replacement license if yours has been lost, damaged, or destroyed. But for that you need far more information, had to do it last week, needed my addresses for the last 3 years, NI number, driver number, current passport, any previous names used....
The identity theft SCAM comes from an email supposedly from DVLA asking one to confirm driver details, first reported in 2011 it's back due to the 'dropping' of counterpart licence and system changes giving it some credulity

As I said earlier in this thread, anyone using a bit of common sense, and being careful about the 'sharing' of their details, has no need to worry at all.

Unfortunately most people are quite careless with their information, which was my point really. Not everyone is meticulous in taking of their payslips and p60. let alone the more important stuff- You are right in one sense, there's already plenty of information easily obtainable to help with identity theft. But given that is case, why add even more when we should be doing exactly the opposite. I.e. restricting even further the spread of Personal Identifying Information ?

Here's a couple of links:

So you didn't read the links then?

Nothing to do with being 'doomed'.

I did. Its Daily Mail-type, headlining nonsense. Some people get caught out because they're gullible/careless/unlucky. The vast majority don't, end of.

I've never shredded a document in my life. I've never been scammed. I don't lose sleep over 'what-if' and 'it could happen to you' scenarios. Neither do the vast majority. They just take care!

Capital One commisioning 'research' into identity fraud?! That's like getting a die-hard Nazi to 'research' the Holocaust! Truly independent research is virtually non-existent.

A bit headliny maybe - but I'd hardly liken Leicester University to the Daily Mail!

The very point of both articles, not everyone who's careless with their documents get's their identity stolen. Just that people who are careful and do protect their documents and shred / burn when no longer required are much less vulnerable.

And with that I think I'll ask the MODS to close this thread (unfortunately)

I'm sure anyone who is interested in the response from the ICO (when I get one) can PM me.
