I have an early car with the same wiring as yours. When working on my air bag fault I made a note of the wiring colours to the DCU which do not always correspond with the official wiring diagram! In the order in which you've listed them: Blue (U) is pin 21: input from side impact crash sensor (RH side). There is only one wire shown on the diagram. White/Purple (WP) [the first colour is the main, the second the tracer] is pin 17: side airbag (LH side) negative. Are you sure that it's not white/orange? Black/White is not shown. Orange/Red (OR) is pin 23: front pre-tensioner (LH side) negative. Caution: make sure that you are reading the main and tracer colours accurately because there is also a red/orange (RO) which is pin 18: side airbag (RH side) positive which is more likely. Red/Purple (RP) is pin 19: side airbag (RH side) negative. Brown/Red (NR) is pin 25: front pre-tensioner (RH side) negative. Brown (N) is pin 24: front pre-tensioner (RH side) positive. Simon

I guess that's where the connector used to be.

I am not into electrics in any way apart from wiring up plugs/switches at home. I have again taken details of the wiring and these are, for my LHD car: Left hand of passenger seat: Yellow sheath with 2 wires coming out, I@Purple/White 1@ Black/White Right hand of passenger seat: Yellow sheath with 2 wires coming out, both coloured Blue. From the floor at side of vent: Black sheath with 4 wires coming out: 1@ Brown 1@ Red/Purple 1@ Brown/Red 1@ Red/Orange (could be orange/red) I am not sure about the pins you mention, fuses or something? I am obviously hoping to find out which of the 4 wires from the floor attach to which wire on the seat. Many thanks for all your help. Jim |

Jim's car is from 1999 and the wiring diagram for that does show the wiring colours from connector to pre-tensioner. None of them is WP or BW! Quote:
I gave you the pin numbers on the air bag ECU because some will also be on its connector (but you'll need a magnifying glass). Using this information you will be able to identify the wiring colours for your pre-tensioners from DCU to underseat connector. Compare those with the cut wires you have and you'll be half way there. Regarding the seat, for the RH pre-tensioner the diagram gives YU (yellow with blue tracer) and WU (white with blue tracer). These connect with N (brown) and NR (brown with red tracer) from the DCU which you have identified. BW and U (blue) remain a mystery. Simon

I do thank you for all your information, but I am a wee bit in a quandry insofar as some of the wires I have are not showing in your diagram what with the different colours. My car is Spanish, LHD, 2000 V6 2.0 (Registered Dec 1999) Lovely paintwork and looks the part when cleaned and polished, runs as well as can be expected although a wee bit thirsty and only does around 3000 klm per year over 3 months. I feel that I should continue to obtain more info on the wiring and by the time of the next ITV (MOT) 5/4/23 if not before just have the garage take a chance and connect the wires with the info we have to date. Many thanks once again. Jim |

I've never knowingly looked at a wiring diagram for the earlier model - I assumed they were the same (why would they spend money changing the wiring colours on what is essentially the same car ) but it's beginning to look to me like what we have here is the older wiring (so a brown wire, unlike mine), but... possibly a pre-tensioner from a later model, with wiring colours like mine...
I DEFINITELY wouldn't guess about connecting any wires up - an exploding airbag would be depressing. But if you can undo teh seat, get in the back, rock the seat forward (you can jam it in place by the headrest against the roof, and have a good long inspection, you should be able to find the two wires coming down from the seat belt fixing. They are for the pre-tensioner, and it doesn't matter which way round you connect them, but it looks like they should go to N (brown) and NR (brown with red tracer). That would be one pair sorted anyway! Maybe when you get her back to the UK you could get one of the guys who really understand thee motors to help you. Good luck Roger

You need to find out to which component, side airbag and pre-tensioner, the two blue wires and the WP & BW go. The best way to do this is to take the seat out of the car, turn it upside down and physically trace the wires back until you find out where they go. This will also enable you to be more precise about the tracer colours. When you get a clear view of the whole circumference of one of these wires, it's obvious which colour the tracer is. Quote:
The wiring colours weren't changed (I have checked) but they connect to different pin numbers on each DCU. Early cars had a Temic MRS3 but cars with the later fusebox had an Autoliv. Quote:

Not at all - I meant help him physically, rather than this way I'm sure he'd love you to have a go...

I am a wee bit frustrated now and that is why I said I might try and link up the wires! The seat is still loose and the car resides in Spain all the time generally at an Alicante airport parking facility. I have checked the seat wires coming from under the seat and NOT the floor and they are SQUIB= 1@ Purple/White and 1@ Black/White on left hand side of seat. 2xBlue wires on the right hand side of seat, these go up the back of the seat behind the magazine holder, but dont know where to, just within the back of seat. The wires from the floor are as stated= 1@ Brown, 1@Red/Purple, 1@ Brown/Red, 1@ Red/Orange or could be Orange/Red! Hope thios is more helpful. Many thanks Jim |
