Actually it was originally a pudding .

It later became a tart so there .

It was invented in 1820 and was a flaky base topped with egg and crushed almonds with a layer of jam .

It now has a shortcrust base and an almond syrup mix and jam.

By the way i used to make them when i worked at Mothers Pride as a baker .

We packed them in Mr Kipling boxes .

We mostly made Bakewell slices.

We also made them for Marks and Spencers .
