Yes that's the crux of it. Maximising servicing periods. Almost everything developed over those thirty years has been aimed towards it. The 'average' car owner doesn't want a car that needs too much looking after. A 15-thousand miles oil regime and a five year coolant life is far more marketable than the 3k/annual they had then. Have things improved or got worse? Always debatable.

Doubt that's possible on the forum. I guess we have big nuts - err -

Blue: Old tried and tested formula using only inorganic ingredients. These are solid chemicals dissolved in ethylene glycol. The blue dye is an indication of this type of formula. Relatively short service life of 2 years or so. A good reliable system provided it's serviced as specified. Essential type for older/vintage engines that contain metals other than aluminium.

Red: Relatively recent and still have ongoing development. Uses Organic Acid derivatives dissolved in ethylene glycol. More advanced Technologically speaking (hence OAT). More expensive, but a 4-5 year service life. Typically dyed red or orange. Specified by mgr for the 75/ZT. Early red type was implicated in GM cooling systems failure and caused massive litigation in USA. Also associated with rubber softening. The prime reason some choose to use blue type. Rogue ingredients now superceded, but I suspect is still susceptible to problems if neglected.

The essential thing is to use one or the other. Mixtures will cause sedimentation/gelation and failure to do the job.

When it's time for a flush on mine, I'll be going to blue. Have seen the Viton O Ring between thermostat and coolant rail eaten by OAT in the past.

One other antifreeze I used way back in my many alloy engined cars was Fridex Spolana, it was an excellent coolant but had the disadvantage of being clear!

It would be nice if some of the more technically minded on here could tell us which antifreeze we should be using and the reasons behind the advice.

That way we lesser souls will know whether we should be looking at flushing our systems and changing our current stuff and the reasons why we should be doing it??
