I have cover with ADAC which is the German version of the aa full cover throughout Europe including the UK 109 euro for the year for all the family including caravan. Worth a look,b because you can cancel your aa cover, if you breakdown at home you phone adac and they send the aa anyway!!

Went to Italy in 2006. Drove down through France stopping at a different place each night. Italy is a beautiful place, but you need the m/ ways if you want to get anywhere fast. Went down as far as Agropoli the other side of Napoli. The further south you go, the more interesting the towns and villages are. We would go again, but the cost has risen to much I am afraid.

Made it to nurenberg, beautiful city. Conflicted history with it being the home for nazi party rallies, fantastic thought provoking museum. ZT-T with caravan below after 525 miles. Next leg today to border with Austria.

I'm really interested how you guys get on. what mileage per day are you doing with the van on the back and what speed are you towing at?

I've done 200 in a day between Peak District and Southampton so not steep hills.

When towing how many miles would you do before changing the oil?

Is 500 in a day towing at 60 too much for the cars when they have a caravan on the back?

I have always felt the limit of towing in a day is down to what the driver/passengers is happy to tolerate - after all, then engine/gearbox etc will be up at operating temperature within the first 30 miles. Other people may disagree.
Think the furthest I have towed in a day (with the 75) was probably ~200 miles with the caravan, or 300 miles with a car trailer (150 miles empty, 150 miles loaded)

However if covering ~500 miles at 60MPH, that is at least 8 hours driving.... That is what I would be more concerned about - the driver, not the vehicle.

You are right, the driver is the problem. The longest stretch was from rotterdam to nurenberg which was 9 hours, that was definitely enough in one stint.

Last year I did 600 miles in one go from nr Valencia to Lagos Portugal towing my van. It was all motorway/dual carriageway, I'd had car trouble so just wanted to get to my destination to get it sorted.
I wouldn't want to do it again, normally I tend to aim for 2-300 miles in a day, the lower end if the route is A roads through towns etc.

Just a final update, made it back to Yorkshire without missing a beat, really proud of my car. Low brake pad warning came on so picked some up today. About 28 mpg for 1750 miles, the rest was done by ferry from Hull to rotterdam. My mate who came with us was in a discovery and his propshaft has gone. I will definitely treat it to a remap when I can afford.
