And why it was mounted on the outside of the car

Why.. thats because of the optional 6ft satelite reciever - helps get pin-point accuracy whether your in mid-city skyscrapers or lost somewhere in deepest Siberia under huge cloud-cover and snow-fall.

That spoils all the fun of getting wife to hold it out of the window because satellite has gone behind a cloud

Best not let the wife know that normal cloud cover doen't affect satelite reception too much!

I once convinced her that rumble strips and the bumps in the road approaching some traffic islands were to alert totally blind drivers that they were wandering out of lane or approaching an island. Evil *** at times I am.

Reminds me of a guy on the local news not so long ago...

Police pulled a car over for 'eratic' driving behaviour. They were suspicious of the car driver when they approached the car. When asked to step out of the car, the driver said "Can my friend" (who was in the passenger seat) "come with me?"

It later turned out that the driver was not only completely blind, but also profoundly deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other. His friend was 'guiding' him down the road.

You've gotta wonder sometimes, haven't you...
