Just my preference Bob. I love the auto gearbox, just not on the diesel. It wrecks the fuel economy, saps performance and costs more to tax. I'm on 42 mpg in constant town driving. I'd be lucky to see over 30mpg from the auto.

My solution was to beef up the performance - it tackles the high tax (makes you feel like you're getting your money's worth) and performance (blimey it shifts!).

I just don't look at the MPG - I know at the moment it starts with a '2'

Nothing finer than stirring a 190 up with a manual box. You can experiment with the rev range as well as sampling that sound on full tilt...

Must be something wrong with your auto, my remapped 2002 CDT auto shows mid 40s easily on a run, currently showing 43.4 I think.( display verified by brim to brim )

This is a simple one, if the badge on front says MG it should have a manual, if it says Rover it should be an auto......how easy is that?

I've always had a mixture of boxes on my cars but do have a preference towards auto's on the whole, however they do need a LOT of power to make them work. My 540i with almost 300Bhp worked well as an auto whereas my brothers 528i with around 18bhp was dire.

Both of our MG's are manual's which really suits the car however my Jeep and Sterling are both auto's as they really should be!

Can't disagree with that, I think an auto = about a 10% loss across the board.. Autos really suffer in town traffic though, coz they can't get out of the low gears. having said that, putting a manual in too high a gear can shake a car to bits and wreck it's clutch very quickly...

MG should be manual (supposed to be a sports car innit?) Rover should be auto. I think your jeep should be manual too innit...

Nah despite all it's power the Jeep is basically a living room on wheels. The seats are like arm chairs and the ride it pretty much how I imagine my living room would handle if it was road legal! Deffo an auto for that one!

The automatic gearbox will change up at the correct time according to road speed, throttle angle, and other factors. The fuel consumption penalty in urban use is due to the losses in the torque converter each time it couples the engine to the road wheels when starting from rest. If the transmission is left in 'drive' with the brakes applied for long periods (something which the majority of drivers do) there will be an additional loss.

It's worth remembering that with a manual gearbox, if a higher gear is engaged too soon a greater throttle angle is required to maintain road speed and fuel consumption can actually rise. It's not just a simple case that a higher gear equals more miles per gallon.
