Sorry to ask this, but is this an official event covered by the club's own public liability insurance?

If there is no liability insurance in place then please make sure someone does a basic risk assessment at the start of each day and also throughout the day. I suggest this given that I attended a local classic car show near Exeter only last month and despite the weather being calm, there was a sudden large gust of wind which lifted a large gazeboo off the ground, distorting its framework and then carried it over some parked exhibiting cars, damaging a year old Morgan Aero 8 and a 1986 Porsche 928 in the process.

The whole incident could have got worse (i.e. for other vehicles) if someone had not run forward and together with four other people pulled the framework onto the ground and thrown himself onto it (given how distorted the framework was he was lucky not to have injured himself).

Clearly the gazebo had not be secured to the ground properly and this freak gust of wind caused this very sorry episode and also dampened the enthusiasm of many fellow exhibitors who had witnessed this. Hopefully the club who had the gazebo were insured. If not, then it will be down to their club members to pay for the damage to the vehicles.

Please do not be offended by this, but as someone who witnessed this incident firsthand, it suddenly brought home the importance of having insurance in place and also secured props such as gazebos, flag poles, signs, etc.

Have a good time at Powderham and I will come over and look over your cars and say "hello".

Very good advice...However I feel that maybe this should have been posted on the general meets page so that all who organise events etc can benefit from your experience.. or do you feel that we in the SW region are more likely to be careless at meets.: Please do not be offended by this
Regards Ian
