I personally prefer to use the setting/locking tools on the KV6.
I've had more than a few in that have had previous belt changes & evidence of good old tippex to mark up the sprocket positions.
As a matter of interest, I've used these previous marks as reference & surprisingly, by the time the new belt (front) is fitted, using the correct tools, the previous marks don't line up !
I'm only talking about a small amount but nonetheless, they're out.
As said, this is not just a one off occurrence.

With regards to the tools being different between the R75 & ZT, it is just the 190 that requires the different adapters for the sprockets.
Interesting point and a bit worrying, but circumstances dictate that this will be attempted without the tools and I dont want to open the Tools Vs No-Tools can of worms. If it goes wrong I will be 1st to admit it on here and actively encourage people to use them, in an ideal world the tools should be used. However we are now in a banger market and if people are willing to give it a go instead of weighing in it should be encouraged.

Please note that the ZT & ZT-T 180 auto KV6 also needs the 190 cam timing tools as well.

Steve, please don't say that. Just because a model has low resale values doesn't entitle it to be tarred with that term. In my mind, a "banger" is a rusty, dented heap of any age which runs badly, has a smoky exhaust, torn upholstery and a tatty dashboard with parts missing. It's on its last legs.

No Rover 75 or MG ZT is a "banger".

Simon

Yep me too. My preference was the Ford Granada.

Jag XJs were better on the day, but more work plating them up or the suspension would fall apart, and they had a tendency to eventually fold in the middle.

The Banger term was a bit bellow the belt, but that is the harsh reality of what some sell for. I think this one looks quite smart for a banger.

No torn upholstery here:

It purrs along nicely, does not run smoky and hopefully is about to get a new set of legs:

One of the rear belts, looks very good to me:

Hard to tell until I get at it, but the front primary belt seems to have worn more:

I will post some more when belts are off.

Here it is with fan being dealt with:

I bet it would make a cracking banger, very well built and no folding in the middle

Old tippex marks are not supposed to align necessarily. You never know who or how, so forget about them.
If you leave the front sprockt alone, and change like any othder OHC engine with marks, you will be back to where you were before.
It really is that simple.
And if the front sprocket has never been touched before, that will be factory setting, exactly!
