Good man!
It's not an easy job - DIY-able, yes, but not easy.

The original Slave seems to have followed the usual failure process - bearing failure leading to 'total meltdown'.

Interestingly enough, when I went to fit the replacement, it fell apart in my hand. I bought it on eBay, against my better judgement as I really wanted an all-metal job, but this one looked better built than the O/E. Not so, it appears. However, the vendor is sending me a 'better' replacement for tomorrow. If it's the same, I'll get a refund and go to the next stage.

Thanks gratefully for following the thread and your ongoing support. It does help!

The clutch looks like new and I suspected so when I drove the car initially. Just a gut feeling at the time, proved correct. It's also got a sprung friction plate (see pic) which, I believe, is good for the DMF.

Since the car's in bits, I'll be cleaning it up somewhat underneath since the brakes look crummy and there's surface corrosion all over the place. Nothing terminal, just bad to know it's there. Can't abide that.

I think I've turned a corner with the Rover. I'm really looking forward to driving her again. I don't often get excited about cars but I do with 75's.

Pants about my bike, though. (see other post entitled Aw..COME ON!!) Meh.

Had the clutch out and it's been recently changed by the looks of it. It's an AP clutch, too!! Friction surfaces are like new. Hardly worn at all.

Gearbox doesn't look like much once it's on the bench!!

There's no benefit in fitting a cheap eBay Slave - the best (in my opinion) is the Borg & Beck unit.
Chances are it'll just be another cheapie - grab a B&B and know it's probably going to outlive the car.

I have them in stock and ready to send - you should have dropped me a line if cost was an issue, I'm sure we could work something out.

The slave looks as though it could be the original ? I would also be concerned that the clutch is original if an AP one , I only say this as both my slave and clutch were original items and although the clutch would probably have lasted another 20,000 miles I wasn't going to risk having to do the job again anytime soon.

Congrats at getting it all apart. I'd suggest (given the large amount of effort you've had to put into it) that you take a careful look at the clutch basket as well. If the clutch has been replaced that recently but the slave wasn't replaced (or only with a cheap unit) did they skimp so much as to not replace the basket? If so I'd replace all three as the plate itself is probably the cheapest part. On the other hand if it's a sprung plate in very good condition... it may be worth keeping. Besides, it won't take you anywhere near as long to strip down next time.

PS. Check for DMF play as well and inspect the flywheel face.
PPS. Respect for doing it yourself. I chickened and had the whole lot done by a garage I nearly trust for the best part of a grand (DMF and both cylinders included).
