An off the wall thought. Last year when reversing into a parking space a terrible and acrid smell entered the car. Switched off, lifted bonnet, no sign of any fault but the smell was strongest on drivers side at rear of engine. Did shopping re-started car all OK. Few days later same thing and a week later it happened again. That's when the penny dropped, it only occurred with steering on full lock in parking manoeuvres.

Bonnet up and with my brother observing under bonnet when I applied full lock and cause found. Pin hole in hose from power steering pump to rack was giving way under pressure and squirting fluid onto exhaust, hence the burning acrid smell.

Might not be the case in your situation but worth checking out as process of elimination.

I'd say that was a massive possibility mate. For a start, the car would have just been on full lock to reverse onto the drive... Interesting. And at times, it does feel like the power steering cuts out a little bit...

As said it's an off the wall and very unusual situation, worse still the amount of power steering fluid lost was so minimal it did not appear to drop in the reservoir. Whatever your problem turns out to be, hope you solve it soon.

Me too. Scary smell, haven't used car since. Weird thing is, although the smell was so strong inside and out.. Even when you walked to the rear, no smoke could be seen..

Not unknown for the light switch module to burn out on our cars, so worth checking it out.

The light switch module is where you turn the lights on, right?

Won't be that then as it doesn't smell from there.

Take the front offside wheel off and look for a deep groove in the side wall where your broken front offside suspension spring is rubbing against the tyre....
